Section 4 softball state semifinalists at a glance

Section 4 participants in New York State Public High School Athletic Association softball final fours this weekend boast 17 state titles between them.

Deposit-Hancock's pedigree includes last year's championship and six when Deposit was a solo outfit.

Windsor is trying to add to a trophy case that has four state championship plaques. Thomas A. Edison and Maine-Endwell are both three-time champions.

As of Wednesday evening, the schedule remained on track at Long Island's Moriches Athletic Complex in Center Moriches amid air quality issues across New York. Semifinals are set for Friday in all five classes, with title games to follow Saturday.

A capsule look at the four teams as they try to add to Section 4's total of 51 state softball championships.

Friday's semifinals: Maine-Endwell (22-2) vs. Section 11 champion Bayport-Blue Point (21-4), 10 a.m.; Section 2 champion Troy (21-4) vs. Section 5 champion Webster Thomas (18-7), 10 a.m.

Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 11 a.m.

M-E's road to final four: Spartans beat Vestal, 11-7, in Section 4 final, then downed Section 9's Roosevelt, 2-1, and Section 1's Ursuline, 8-3, to take the regional crown.

Maine-Endwell's championship history: The Spartans captured three Class A state championships in a row from 2016 to 2018. This is their first appearance in the final four since 2018.

M-E at a glance: Right-hander Olivia Lewis is among the top pitchers in Section 4. Senior shortstop/leadoff hitter Kaetlyn L'Amoreaux was a fourth-team Class A all-state pick last season. The deep Spartans lineup hit four homers against Vestal in the Section 4 final and the bottom of the order has produced big hits throughout the postseason. Maine-Endwell averages 8.6 runs per game.

Friday's semifinals: Windsor (14-3) vs. Section 2 champion Ichabod Crane (21-1), 4 p.m.; Section 5 champion Wellsville (22-1) vs. Section 9 champion Marlboro (18-2), 4 p.m. Ichabod Crane beat Chenango Valley, 12-0, in last year's state championship game.

Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 12:30 p.m.

Windsor's road to final four: Black Knights downed 2022 Class B state runner-up Chenango Valley, 9-7, in the Section 4 final and rolled to a 14-3 victory against Section 3 champion Chittenango in the regional final.

Windsor's championship history: Windsor's state titles came in 2004, 2008, 2011 and 2013.

Black Knights at a glance: Windsor's lineup has been among the most potent in Section 4, with Ashlee Hagerman's two three-run homers highlighting the victory over Chittenango after she went 4-for-4 in the sectional final. Anna Finn had two hits, a homer and three RBIs in the win over Chenango Valley. Danica Ball and Alexis Durdon have split pitching duties.

Friday's semifinals: Edison (17-3) vs. Section 6 champion Gowanda (16-6), 6 p.m.; Section 9 champion SS Seward (15-5) vs. Section 2 champion Chatham (21-2), 6 p.m.

Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 2 p.m.

Edison's road to final four: Spartans downed 2022 Class C state runner-up Greene, 1-0, in the Section 4 semifinal; two-time Class C state champion Elmira Notre Dame, 2-1, in the sectional final and Section 3 champion Cooperstown, 6-1, in the regional.

Spartans' championship history: Edison has made it to three state finals and won all three, with championships coming in Class D in 1991 and Class C in 2014 and 2019.

TAE at a glance: Edison put up 10 runs or more in 11 of its 16 regular-season games but has relied on clutch hitting, defense and the pitching of junior right-hander Gabby Milazzo throughout the postseason. In Edison's last three postseason games, Milazzo has not allowed an earned run through 21 innings while giving up 14 hits and striking out 21.

Friday's semifinals: Deposit-Hancock (21-2) vs. Section 2 champion Salem (11-10), 1 p.m.; Section 5 champion Friendship/Scio (19-3) vs. Section 3 champion Poland (17-4), 1 p.m.

Saturday's final: Semifinal winners, 11:30 a.m.

Deposit-Hancock's road to final four: In four games in the sectional and state tournaments, Deposit-Hancock has outscored its opponents by a combined 68-4. That includes a 17-0 win over Southern Cayuga in the Section 4 title game and a 14-0 victory over Section 9's Eldred in the regional final.

Deposit-Hancock's championship history: Deposit won Class D state titles in 1990, 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2019 and was Class C champion in 1989.

Deposit-Hancock at a glance: The Eagles are young but talented, with just two seniors. Kaitlyn Macumber, a first-team Class D all-state pick last year, has been at her best in the postseason. At the plate, the senior is 10-for-18 with three homers and eight RBIs over the four games. Macumber has not allowed a run on the mound in 18 2/3 innings, with 46 strikeouts and a no-hitter against Marathon in the sectional quarterfinals.
